The Island Vet: The Winter Snow Goose
As autumn turns to winter on Gull Haven Island, a snow goose crash-lands amidst a storm. Tia and Nat jump to the rescue in this heartwarming tale from Gill Lewis.
The arrival of a rare snow goose heralds the start of a very harsh winter for the Haven Islanders. They have to deal with long power cuts, and when the boats can’t make it over from the mainland, they start to run out of food and other supplies.
In this dark time, Tia and Nat find a creative way to bring the islanders together in a celebration of light and community that will help see them through to the better days ahead.
Author’s note:
When Storm Darragh barrelled across the Atlantic and slammed into the UK in the winter of 2024, it took down trees and power cables, plunging the village where I live into darkness. We were without electricity for almost five days, and it made me truly appreciate the luxuries of electric lights, hot water and heating. The internet went out and so for five days we did not even look at our phones. It was a rare moment of quiet in a noisy world. We slowed down. We joined together by the fire for warmth, we talked and read books. The Winter Snow Goose was inspired by dark nights and stories told by candlelight.
